Qalgiq Ceviche (arctic Cod Ceviche)
Qalgiq Ceviche, also known as Arctic Cod Ceviche, is a traditional dish from Chukchi Cuisine. This refreshing and tangy ceviche is made with fresh Arctic cod, marinated in citrus juices and mixed with onions, peppers, and herbs.
Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh Arctic cod, cut into small cubes
- 1 cup fresh lime juice
- 1 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1 red onion, finely chopped
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a glass or ceramic bowl, combine the Arctic cod, lime juice, and lemon juice. Make sure the fish is completely submerged in the citrus juices. Cover and refrigerate for about 15 minutes, or until the fish is opaque and "cooked" by the acidity of the juices.
- Once the fish is "cooked," drain off most of the citrus juices. Add the chopped red onion, bell pepper, jalapeño pepper, and cilantro to the bowl with the fish. Gently toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Refrigerate the ceviche for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Serve the Qalgiq Ceviche chilled, garnished with additional cilantro if desired.
