Seaweed Tempura
Seaweed tempura is a delicious and crispy dish that originates from the Commander Islands, known for its rich marine biodiversity. This recipe combines the umami flavor of seaweed with a light and crispy tempura batter, creating a delightful appetizer or snack.
Ingredients
- 1 cup seaweed, such as nori or wakame
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 egg
- 1 cup ice-cold water
- Salt, to taste
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then stir in the ice-cold water.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. It's okay if the batter is a bit lumpy.
- Heat the oil in a deep pan or pot over medium-high heat.
- Dip the seaweed pieces into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off, and carefully place them in the hot oil.
- Fry the seaweed tempura in batches for 1-2 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve the seaweed tempura immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
